Default Rear main seal or upper oil pan

Oil leak from sons 04 V6. Appears to be coming out thru two “inspection holes” in the bottom of the cast bell housing. For sure I thought that mean rear main seal but someone mechanical said it could be the upper oil pan. How do I tell the difference?

90% of the time it's the main rear oil seal. Had to do mine unfortunately and surprisingly. Costs a fortune, need to drop the tranny to get to it as well as the tcase and drive shafts.

best way to know for sure is is there oil every where? I thought mine was the oil pan but it was not. The main seals go out on these rarely but it happens

Thanks Bobby. Pretty much what am thinking. Yeah, there’s a lot of oil. We took it down to pressure clean and then drove home. In a three mile trip oil was already coming out off the inspection holes of the bell housing.

Trying to decide whether to do myself or let son discover more realities of ownership and blowing $1000 on a stupid $25 seal.

I would say let someone do it and let it be done. I have had zero issues since mine was replaced almost a year ago now. Yes 1k is pretty close to total cost for the $25 Toyota seal.
Solid truck so o say it’s worth it.

I might replace mine since my Torque converter is now shuddering.

mine happend all of sudden, no symptoms other than the leak, oil was pretty much all around the bottom of the oil pan and other areas. Was not a ton so I caught it right away. Was coming from the rear main at the two holes on the bottom.

Yeah, Sams is coming from same location. Told him to go get a quote from and Indy mechanic. Hopefully should have a quote in a couple days.

On the 4th of July, I put it into 4x4 to get up and through this sandy hill and aside from having actuator issues (couldn't get it out of 4x4 on the way home), I had a leak also. I thought it would be the t-case or actuator..........had one of our techs check it, and he said the t case was full.
Front diff was a little low, but engine oil was around a quart low, trans perfect. So now I'm confused as to where exactly the leak is coming from.........as it seemed it was dripping down from the t case area, and smelled more like gear oil maybe?

I wonder if it's engine oil and it just blew back and covered everything else in oil........need to have this seal checked out too I guess.

If it’s the rear engine seal it would be all around the oil pan too. Sounds like a seal on the t case going bad?
