Hi Mark,

What time are you meeting at Kennedy meadows campground on Friday or are you spending the Friday night there?

Might join you but have all the skid plates removed due to some overly aggressive driving I did on the last time i was out. Need to pound them flat and reinstall. It was very nice up there the last time I went and would like to go again.

Hey John,

We are camping overnight at Kennedy. I donít think anyone is leaving LA until 4pm so earliest people will be 8:30ish. Iíll be leaving Thousand Oaks at 4pm.

Iím not leading this trip but assuming we are not doing Sherman Trail so skids not an issue across the Meadows and streams.

Would love to have a few guys from 120. .

The leader mentioned he’s open to any off-roading 4x4 so Sherman Pass might be on the agenda - go beat those skids into submission John!

I’ve read several reports of people getting over SP easily recently so sounds like skids is not too much an issue but who knows????

Apparently the Leader (5th Gen) doesn’t have aftermarket skids so not sure about SPT 4x4. I may do it Sunday on way out

Yeah I couldn't make it in time. My dual battery setup is shorting out somewhere for some reason so I gave up out of frustration and went to tinker on my Cressida instead.

Fantastic weekend. Very relaxed. Saw some new sites. Very cold at night = 23 degrees!

Our trip organizer Mike was one very cool dude. His 5th gen is sweet. I think we helped him spend about $20K on his truck when he gets back in town lol.

I highly recommend stopping at Kennedy Meadow General Store for a slice of nostalgia. Nice store owners and very nicely themed store. And 4 dogs that you just want to take home!

Sunday I messed up our plans unfortunately. we were just leaving the Meadow (first water crossing done, and my rear brake pad disassociated itself from my brake caliper. Long story short, after wasting an hour thinking about alternatives, John agreed to drive into Ridgecrest to get me new pads.

Zoe went with him as a fall back if they could not get parts on a Sunday afternoon she could wait for my son to come up with new parts - surely an auto place around town would have them??!!

"Luck" turned out our way and about 6 hrs later they returned with new pads. 5 mins on the install and we were back on the road. Unfortunately that put us all home very late!!!

Poor John - not the best way to spend his birthday day, driving a six hour round trip for a 5min repair job.

I might post some photos later!

In the future - does anyone know...is there any way to disable the rear brake system from the front? I would have thought there would be some redundancy system so if you lost one set of brakes, the others would still be able to function independently. John and I didn't have any "bright ideas" on that one!

Oh, and what did I do while they were gone for six hours - made lunch, stared at trees, shot some targets, built and lit a fire, arrange my tools, contemplated life without offroading ...

And as side note - whats happened to all the wildlife??? Last time I went we saw a bobcat, a herd of cows, woodpeckers, ground squirrels (or whatever they are called)... While sitting in a forest for six hours from midday to sunset, I saw one squirrel. two birds... John hypothesized the shooters have driven them away from any humans.

Other side note, driving out of a heavily wooded 4x4 trail in pitch black was really confusing for trail finding and obstacle avoidance. Just saying! Thank goodness for GPS tracks.
