Default engine cutting power at high speeds ?

Had this happen around 4 or 5 times now. Usually situation, I am cruising at hwy speeds 65ish and need to get moving to pass someone or go around, get on the gas and it revs from about 2700 rpm to about 3.5-4k and the truck starts to go and in about 2 seconds , the engine cuts power and backs off while I am on still on the gas and the engine is not pushing the truck, almost like vsc is on cutting power. Best way to describe it. This happened again this morning merging on to the hwy from about 50-55 to accelerate and it started to go then about 2 seconds later while still on the gas the engine cuts back power. I pressed the gas more almost all the way and it stayed the same, no power. I am thinking VSC or electronic related. Truck is in top notch, no issues ever. Seems very odd.

I do not have any codes and the truck seems fine aside from this issue. Thought about turning off the vsc on the hwy and seeing if I can reproduce it with it off.

Things I can think of:
Clean throttle body (been about 2 years) will do tonight
Clean mass flow sensor (been about 2 years) will do tonight
Air filter clogged dirty (cleaned about 6 months ago but will check)

Other things
Spark plugs maybe? (been about 50k but used the 90k plugs last time)

Possible fuel issues?
Vacuum line? All lines seem fine, no cracks or wear under the hood. Will look better tonight.
Bad or clogged fuel filter? (Engine burning lean) would I need to drop the fuel tank for access of the fuel filter?
Fuel pressure?
Oxygen sensor?

Things I hope itís not
Transmission issue ? Have about 127K on it and have not changed fluid yet.

Have you checked for any codes on the ECU?
What happens if you gun it hard from standstill and hold down the gas through the gears?

Fuel filter requires the gas tank to be dropped (horrible design IMO).

no codes at all. It shifts gears fine, I will try to get on it from a go and see what happens. Really odd. No performance mods on the truck, drop in K&N filter. That's it. Regeared 4.56 a couple years back now. Other than that i'll try to push it from a start to see if it happens at lower gears.

It really seems like it's vsc power cut (atleast that's how it feels) but i have no idea why it would do that on the hwy while trying to pass or even in 5th gear. It's not like I could brake lose a tire at that speed lol. Be awesome if I could though haha.

This may be stupid but could also be helpful I forget about 4th gens, but on the 5th you can't dual pedal while moving. Are you somehow managing to touch the brake pedal while this is happening? Maybe the sensor is failing?

But none of the VSC/TRAC lights come on or any beeping??
When I bumped my wheels way out alignment on a trails, I had the VSC kick in on straight line driving and had to use the VSC bypass mod to get back home.

Do you have the VSC off OEM button? If no maybe add the bypass switch mod. Then with VSC deactivated see if you still experience this issue. May help to determine if in fact the ECU may be cutting power.

Correct nothing else happens only power cut off. No beep no braking. I do have the vsc disable and will see if it happens with that engaged. It's very odd.

Ok was able to reproduce it from a start. Happened In third gear this time. Also tried again on the hwy with the vsc off and it still happened. Really think it's a sensor or something at this point. I'll clean the maf and throttle tonight.

Bizarre, would expect a code to pop up if it is fuel starvation

Ok cleaned the mass air flo sensor. Cleaned the throttle body. It was dirty for sure. Air Filter looks clean. Not sure what else to do. I'll check on it in the morning on the ride to work. Maybe try a fuel additive cleaner like sea foam only in the tank though?

Did I mention I have not did a tranny flush and have 127k ? Was told by Toyota to wait until 130-150 k to have that done since they're sealed units.
Tranny slip is the best way to describe it the feeling.
It changes gears smoothly though and it only happens when I really get on the gas. Happened 4 or 5 times now. Twice was me reproducing it.

Could it be a sensor in the gas pedal cutting throttle? That usually happens when you first engage the throttle though. Like a delay to the pedal.
This is happening while on the gas and happens right around 4.5k rpms then
Hesitates and revs drop too. I'm staying on the gas and even engaged the throttle a little more and power was loss. Odd

How long does the power cut last and what do you have to do to get it going again? If you shift manually are there still the same symptoms?

I haven't tried down shifting to see what happens yet. It seems To happen only when I really get on the gas. It revs up and starts to go then all of a sudden stops after about 3 seconds into it. Then the power just cuts and it stays at speed.
I tried feathering the throttle and it reved a few times but no power. When it happens it lasts for about 3 seconds then it kind of hesitates and I back off. I feel like if I stay in it it's going to hurt something. Maybe spark plugs or coil packs? I'll be ordering some ngk next if it does it again tomorrow.

Alright it happened again.
This time I threw it back into 4th gear and it did not change. I stayed on the gas to see what would happen. It just reved the rpms and did not go faster or slower. Won't go past 4.5 k rpms. No change from 5th to 4th either.

I tried to recreate it on the on ramp switching from 2nd to 3rd, 4th to 5th and it went smooth and did not happen. Reved it up to 4.5 too. Very odd.

So summary here. Happens in any gear when I get on the gas real hard. Just revs up to 4.5 k and doesn't go nor does it slow down. I can not get it to rev past 4.5 k

Spark plugs maybe? Bad gas ?

Bobby

All right so put a full can of ol sea foam into the gas tank and put about 5 gallons gas on top of the already 2-3 gallons in there so, a high concentrated amount. Guess what the problem is inexesitent now.

Must of had some bad gas and build up in my tank. Anyway. Glad that is solved!

Thanks guys for the help

Even their manual says 100k on a sealed tranny! WTF?! That makes no sense, you would think they would try to talk you into doing it. Either way, I did mine around 80k as I had some weird feelings coming from the tranny, but did my manual flush at home with 13 quarts of WS and all has been good since! I personally would do one either way if I was you. Not the machine power flush, as that usually results in something getting loose and clogging crap up, but the simple drain and fill style flush. I tapped into the cooling line to drain it and then manually refilled the same amount that came out till I ran out of fluid to replace the old.

I don't know man. Seems like 100k is when I asked Toyota and they said not to.
I hear ya on the drain and refill method. I think it would be better to have Toyota do t honestly. Probably go ahead and do it soon.

Thanks

Ok well the problem is still here. Not really sure what to do. It gets up to speed like normal but around 40 45 while it's still getting up to speed just goes flat I can floor it and it doesn't do anything. Tried feathering the throttle and it stayed flat. Really odd. Checked all the lines for cracks and everything looks great. Also did the sea foam through the vacumme line into the engine and got some good smoke out during that process. Problem is still there. Might swap the spark plugs and inspect them. If there is anything internal they should show in the spark plugs. Really feels like bad gas from what I've been reading online. This is common problem with bad gas. I always use 87 gas.
I'll report back after I swap plugs. Have to order them first.

Does your speedometer work correctly? It's not jumping around or going to zero when this happens, is it?
