Default Snapping/Clunking sound at full lock?

hi guys,

it seems that whenever i make a fully locked right turn at a low parking lot speed, i hear this sound as if something is snapping into, or out of place. It sounds like a cluck that seems to be coming from underneath the from driver side. It also happens every now and when when i'm reversing with a full wheel lock with the steering wheel turned to the left.

has anyone ever experienced this before?

thanks,

aj

Does it make the noise only when the vehicle is moving and the steering wheel is turned, or will it do it by just turning the steering wheel alone?

Only in motion. Does it make the noise continuously, while the steering is at full lock, or just one clunk?

just one cluck and it's done. i just went to the parking lot to try to reproduce it for a co-worker, and it didn't happen...it's not a consistent thing, but it does happen every now and then.

Well, I think we can rule out CV joints.

That leaves the rest of the suggestions. End links, and other steering parts, swaybar, possibly even a balljoint.

I've had this problem before (not on the 4Runner). It was the end links- just needed tightening in my case.

Does it make the same sound when you go over a speedbump as well? Especially a speedbump when turning.

Can you hear the sound with the window closed or open? Is there any difference with the window closed or open?

Try greasing the two bump stops at the lower front A arms that limit full lock turns. When they are rusty they bind a little and release with a "clunk"

Mine does it also -- same symptoms, loud metallic "clank".... took me a while to figure out what it is. It's the driver side brake caliper. I don't know exactly what causes it, but it only does it the first time you apply the brakes while in reverse and turning. Maybe someone on here that's smarter than me can give you a technical explanation as to why it does it?

You mean the steering stop on the spindle and lower a-arm, right?

i've never heard the doing anything else. it only happens when making the fully locked right turn at a low speed, and reversing with a fully locked turn to the left.

i can def. hear the sound when the window is up. when it's down, it's even louder, and it sounds like it's coming from around the front passenger side.

Try a dab of grease on the steering stops. It is cheap and easy. My old 4Runner had steering stops that would screech, when turned to full lock, and a little articulation.

If you can make it repeat the clunk, have someone steer it for you, while you try to track down the point of origin. (vehicle not moving, of course).

Ah good! That the correct term. Work is driving me nuts today and it feels like MONDAY.

Thank you Andries!

It sounds like Jim is on the money with trying a bit of grease on the steerign stops.

Look on the inside of your front wheels and you will see a U shaped piece of metal on the front of the spindle, that actually can push against the lower a-arm (you will see additional metal stop on it). Dab some grease on both and see what happens.
