Default Moonroof RATTLE

Hello everyone - I hope everyone is having a GREAT summer of 4Running.

My Moonroof has started to REALLY rattle when I'm on washboard off-road, at any speed, even 5 MPH. It does not rattle on pavement at any speed, even 75 MPH.

I recently moved my factory roof rack crossbars. When I returned them to the factory points noted for low wind noise, the rattling really quieted down but is still present.

How is this possible? What's the story?

sounds like some bolts are working themselves loose....either the glass portion where it bolts to the tracks or the track assembly itself that bolts to the body. check those and tighten them as needed....should correct that issue. hope this helps.

It looks like quite a PIA to get at those bolts!! Does the whole headliner have to come out, I wonder?

I could warranty it.

Are you sure it's the moon roof that is rattling?

I heard a similar sound when I installed my bajarack, what I discovered was that 2 of the knob to relocate the factory cross bars were not tightened all the way.

Thanks for the info. that TSB looks like it only applies to 2003 model year 4runners. Will it apply to a 2007?

it will have to be dropped slightly to acces track bolts but not removed completely. and that TSB doesnt apply to 07. ill run it today at work and see if theres something for the newer 4runners and report back you soon.

edit: no Tsb's for this issue on 07's. best bet is to take it to the dealer if its still under warranty. if you're unsure of warranty status pm me your VIN and ill check for you.

Im just going to throw this out there because this is what I have to do about 2x per year .

Part 1. With the roof open in different positions clean and wax the metal parts of the body where the rubber meets the metal. You can get at all of it , but you have to move the roof into different positions .

Part 2. CLean the rubber seals all around the moon roof (soap and water solution work ok ) then after it's dry use something like an Armor all type of product to lubricate and soften the seals and protect them. They do get sun beaten and dry up a but.

I had what I thought was a rattle , but tried this and worked like a charm , it was all just dirty and dry in there. Just a thought and an inexpensive thing to try.

Definitley check the screws in the cross bars. I had the same situation. Checked them and found the culprits, the front crossbar screws were slightly loose, tightend them and that sound never returned.

I have an 03 4runner and that rattle annoyed me for a long time. For me and many others the rattle is coming from the steel rod vibrating on the trac that runs down each side of the sunroof. I open the sunroof and spray white lithium grease up and down the trac with the rod in it. Its easiest to access it by up above, standing on your door jam. NO MORE RATTLE. Moving parts need grease

Are you are saying you discovered the loose knobs when you put the rack on?

After I installed the Bajarack I can hear some rattle when the moon roof is closed but the shade is open. When I close the shade, the rattle goes away.

I can also hear some weld beads rolling aroung in the tubing of the Bajarack when the roof is open. No big deal...just some added noise I didn't have before.

No, what he discovered was that the factory cross bars were loose after they were reinstalled. The rack was removed when his truck was detailed and the cross bars were not secured/tightened properly.

Not trying to hi-jack your thread, but I just bought an 03 4WD SR5 and my sunroof has a faint rattle on the pass side.

It sounds like a loose wire or piece of plastic. Just rattles over bumps.

I can hear it at any speed and it's the same throughout speed changes.

It's not loud enough to hear over the radio though.

Before I dive into this thing, any suggestions?

Thanks.

My rattle is driving me nuts. I took it in a couple months ago and they said it was fine. I left it there for 2 days. Needed my truck back. I never said it didn't work.... So now I have to take it in and make them drive down the road with me cuz this is driving me crazy. They thouht I said it was broken or sumthin.

If it is a rattle you hear, it's the guide rod. It rattles against the metal track. My first attempt was popping it out with a screwdriver and greasing it. That wore away and it's rattling a tad right now. I plan to put some tubing around the rod.

That rod seems like the main cause for rattles.

I used to own a Ford Exploder, that thing had so many rattles, I can live with one slight moonroof rattle.

I can take pics if you want of what I did.

I can get pics, give me a day.

Is it kind of like all the time while in motion? Like a vibration rattle?
