Default Gauge cluster woes

So Sams 04 has a bunch of gauge cluster issues.

- Fuel gauge is barely reading over the empty line but tank is completely full
- Speedometer not working
- Air bag light on
- Low tire pressure light on

Code reader says an oxygen sensor is on the fritz. I'm going to check the wiring on the weekend to ensure that's not damaged before swapping out the sensor.

I am replacing the alternator today which was causing the noise we initially thought could be power steering or a bearing.

Is it possible the bad alternator is not allowing the gauge cluster to operate properly?

The tachometer and odometer works fine so I'm going to eliminate the speed sensors at the moment as causing these problems.

So go ahead and let me know your thoughts on these issues and problem shooting.

Is the light solid or blinking. A solid light normally means 1 or more tires are low on air, a blinking light indicates a faulty sensor (most likely a dead battery which is not replaceable).

Sorry that is all I can help with.

Thx John. Itís a solid light for the low pressure but Iíve checked the tire pressures several times including the spare.

Will really need to check the wiring diagrams for these issues, as it seems to be related to only a few items in the instrument panel. This makes it much harder to find, if all the lights and meters were on the fritz it would have likely been a common ground or power connection.

The speedo is fed through a ECU that feeds from the wheel sensors, you may want to check the threads on the speedohealer or recalibration after bigger tires to see the lines that feed it. May be hard to measure with basic tools as it is a complex electronic signal that feeds the speedo.

You may need to check the diagnostic section in the service manual for the fuel gauge to see where to measure the fuel sender output, etc. Similar for the airbag issue.

Maybe some sort of power surge from the dying alternator that’s causing the dash and speedo issues or may be a speed sensor issue.

Replaced alternator - the fuel gauge is now working.
I donít think the speed sensors are an issue because the odometer is still working.

I have a buddy whoís a mechanic coming over in a couple days to diagnose the other electrical issues.
