Default HID Conversion Hella Rallye 4000

I had 2 Hella 4000s and I absolutly love them. I found a local guy with Lightforce 240 and compared my lights to his. After all, I still like my Hella more then Lightforce. 240 gave better long range light as they can be adjusted as Maglight flashlight, but not that good as Hella in close range. I have Euro beam on my 4000 which gives me unique light patter which covers both Low and High beam of my headlights, plus it gives more and better light then my headlights. So I've decided to upgrade them to HID and get a 3rd light to make the effect even better.
I've ordered 3rd Hella and XenonDepot HID last Tuesday. Received Hella on Wednesday and HID on Thursday.
Here is my write-up...

What I have to work with.

2 old and 1 new Hella Rallye 4000 Euro beam lights:

XenonDepot H1 HID kit (x2 - 3 lights required 3 bulbs, so getting 2 kits leaving me witha spare)

Hella 4000 housing open:

H1 HID bulb from the kit:

To run the wires, I've decided to use HID wires from the kit as some members on TTORA mentioned that they had problems with running HID with original Hella wires.
To do it I need to drill the hole on the back of the light. So I drilled the pilot holes in the middle of the housing:

To run the wires through the housing HID bulb has a gromet. It's 17mm or 11/16. Hmm, very rare size as I figured out by driving to 4 HomeDepot stores. Luckuly for me, my friend had 18mm drill bit, so I decided to go with 18mm and then sealed the gromet if needed:

Then I've installed H1 HID bulbs into all 3 lights. Had an issue with direct fitment. To do a proper fitment I had to curve the wire string holding the bulb to the exact shape of new HID bulb:

Then all I need to do is to assemble everything back and sealed the gromet (I had to do it on all 3 light, which is also good as I now insured of proper sealing), used black outdoor silicone:

I think they look good. Will wait a day for silicone to harden and work out the position on the bumper, then install them on the truck. Will post up as soon as I get them on my truck.

Great writeup Alex. I need to do that to my 3 Hellas 4000s. How much were the two kits from XenonDepot?

I've been wanting to install HID driving lights, but the Hella HID's are way too expensive. I decided to try one of those inexpensive kits off ebay. For $80 it was worth the gamble.....
As for construction it seems well made, but there was no label to say where they were produced.

Edit* they are made in Japan......

Installing bulbs was a simple plug n' play

Since the kit came with grommets, I decided to drill a new hole into the housing, this way I still have the option to use standard H1 bulbs....

Ballast mounted, double sided tape that was supplied with the kit plus I added a hose clamp for extra hold down. Spliced and soldered wiring....

Here's what they look like now......

my original post, glad to see so many people converting them....

Bruce, how is your ballasts holds up there? I'm thinking where to put mine, but I'm afraid that in this location they will be bombarded by road debris and salt in the winter.

Finally I had some time this weekend to wire everything up. I extend the balasts and placed them in the engine bay. I also used 2 circuits system, so I can light up 2 Hellas or 1 central or all 3. I placed the beam of 2 outside between my low and high and used the central to light up the high beam.
Tried them out last night and was amazed. Seems that I'm having a daylight in front of me for ~2000ft at least. I still can see a reflection from Rubics Box placed at 8000ft on the road.

sand gravel don't even come close, the bumper protects against it..... as for salt, that's not an issue here in SoCal.

Don't even think about the 8000k unless you're some ricer poser. That's a blue/purple look. It will be dim and get you ticketed in a hurry on the street. I have the 5000k and I think it's a touch too blue. I wish I got the 4300k, perfectly white.

I had that Jeep thing... But I went to my local Toyota dealer, bought a 4Runner and it cleared that crap right up.

I have 4300K on my headlights and 5000K on my Hella. I think its a perfect combination as 4300 gives me clear white light and 5000 of additional light slightly blue. Don't go over as ~4500 is the most powerfull range. As you go more on K you'll loose brightness but gain fancy color. 8000 gives 1/2 of 4300-5000 brightness.

I wonder if there's an HID kit for my IPF's? Guess I'll have to look around.

If you willing to drille holes and modify the housing, you can use XenonDepot kits.

I don't think that would be that big of a deal. I would probably start with the smaller IPF's and or the PIAA's that I have on the corner's of my roof rack, then make my Big IPF's!
Do they make one for IPF's?
