Default Flasher/Blinker help please!

This is for my 80, I apologize but I figure I'd try here as I'm getting no help from the LC forum and you guys are a bit more technically saavy over here.

Can anyone offer any reason a flasher relay would just buzz (sounds almost like it's sticking and no blinker lights come on) when power is applied from the turn signal lever .....but it works just fine (makes all 4 corners blink) when power is applied from the "hazard" button.

It is the same flasher for both functions, I've done that much trouble shooting.

any ideas? ....I'm at my wits end with this one. In one thread on Mud, some of the guys mention a "converter" but I'm not sure what that would be. I think it's something for adding the additional lights in the after market bumpers.

BTW, I've disconnected all bumper blinkers as well, trying to make it act like stock.

please, someone with some electrical knowledge help me out here.

Thread on Mud is here:http://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-te...upgrade-3.html

I'm "lil' runnah" over there

The sticking is exactly what I had on a car about 15 years ago. The flasher unit had crapped out. Bought a new one and was on my way. Sorry that might not be any help! Never bothered to open it up an have a look.

thanks Mark, I think this is one of those that I'm just not going to figure out online. I'm just going to have to rip the dash apart and go through all the wiring myself. I know the flasher is good, all 4 bulbs are new and good, and I think I've been able to trouble shoot that it's not the actuator on the collumn. ...gotta be a short somewhere.

Does it just buzz for both sides of the turn signal (left and right)?

I assume all the lights work fine with the hazards on?

Off the top of my head I would say that you have either a loose ground connection somewhere, or the unit is bum.

I don't know the 80 wiring, but check to see which connections the hazard light complete separate from the turn signal column. I'm thinking the hazard button uses a different ground/12V than the turn column. Then trace to see which one on the turn column harness is loose, etc.

I didn't have a lot to do the last 30 minutes and I don't know if any of these will help, but you did say you were going to start tearing the dash apart, so maybe have a look ...

Turn signal switch on the column:

Oddly enough, a rusty fuse:

Not sure what was recalled here:

MFS (multi function switch) and/or short in the steering column:

This guy had the opposite to your buzz, and it was also the multi function switch.

croz,
there is suppossed to be a wiring junction inside the pass. side rear panel at the back of the truck. sometimes that fails or needs to have the tow harness disconnected or repaired there; i forget the details but look into that.
also, check your tow wiring harness. it is a common point of failure that causes problems. use a multimeter to make sure it is ok. a short or bad ground there can cause problems

if the issue is a fault at the steering colum, it is easy to take the steering wheel off and check the ring connection. maybe a bad connection or oxidation there has caused problems.

steering wheel removal-- check fsm
-remove airbag (few screws at the 3 and 9 oclock behiind the plastic covers)
-pull out entire airbag assembly, disconnect wire
-steering wheel bolts in the middle
-the electrical ring is there, you can check all connections and wiring
discnnnect battery before starting! and discharge by turning on lights, etc to make sure there is nothing left int he system

electrical is always a bitch to track down... tell me how it goes
