Default 1st Annual Toy120 Mojave Road Trip!!!

This is the trip planning thread for our 1st Annual Toy120 Mojave Road Trip!!!
We can discuss here: who's able to go, dates and schedule, and things of that nature.

In order to do the Mojave Road properly, and to explore other features of the Mojave Preserve, we really need 3 days. We can cram it into two, but 3 will be a much more relaxed, less hurried trip. I'm going to schedule a vacation (holiday for you from OZ) during that month. Would everyone prefer mid week trip, or a Friday morning to Sunday weekend trip? Myself, hell, I wouldn't mind spending another week out there! I've done that at least a dozen times myself, in every type of weather from 120 degrees to snow and freezing. I've been out for a week and not seen a soul the entire time. It's a little more popular now, so we would more than likely encounter some traffic.
Camping is Primitive, contained camp fires are permitted at most of the Primitive camps along the Mojave Road, we just need to bring enough wood for at least two nights. My experience is that the presto type fire logs are good to bring along, as they generally take up much less space in my034runner than does bulk fire wood. If someone brings out a Tacoma or a truck of some sort, of course you can always fit quite a bit of fire wood in there.

September will be nice out there, not too hot, not yet cold. Pets are allowed, as long as they're well behaved. I will more than likely bring my dog Chyna with me (as long as it's not in the 100 degree mark), she is a very well behaved and an ultra cool dog!
So, I'm thinking of maybe (depending if the consensus is mid week or weekend) of some time between September 12th - 18th.
Everybody let me know what your thoughts are. I've taken as few as 1 (me) to 14 trucks on this trip, and have Always had a GREAT TIME!! I took 4 trucks over the Easter weekend, and we had a lot of fun!

So, there you have it folks, the beginning stages of our (soon to be annual) 2006 Toyota120.com Mojave Road Trip!!

1st Annual Toy120 Mojave Road Trip!!!

SEPTEMBER 15th - 17th 2006

EDIT.............................................. 08/23/06..........................

Okay everybody, it's almost here, only three weeks to go.

ATTENTION: PLEASE SEE POST #4. I WAS UNABLE TO FIT IT ALL HERE, SO I MOVED THE WHOLE ITINERARY TO POST #4!!!

Sept sounds good to me. I will prefer long weekend type trip, as I need to get back to my day job sometime

The dates you mentioned also sounds good. I will see about taking my dog, pending if I have a cargo barrier back in place by then (would prefer my cargo system updated).

And just so everyone knows, if you can't do the entire three days, there are various points at which you can exit the Mojave Road and head back to civilization.

SEPTEMBER 15th - 17th 2006

EDIT.............................................. 08/23/06..........................

Okay everybody, it's almost here, only three weeks to go.

For those of us who are taking all three days:

FRIDAY 09/15/06

Meeting place for the beginning of the Mojave Road will be at the AVI Casino/Hotel just outside of Laughlin at 8:30 - 9:00 am on Friday September 15th 2006.

Some, including myself, am more than likely going to go out there Thursday night and get a hotel room (if I can find one that takes dogs).

For those of you coming from parts of California, you might want to consider this (if it's an option for you) so as not to be wiped out from driving for how ever many hours it takes you to get there and then driving for a lot longer.

Make sure that you top off your gas tanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You need to leave with a full tank, enough to be able to go at least 200 miles. The Historic Mojave Road is about 139 miles, we'll be doing about 136 miles of it.

We can stop at Fort Paiute for a short lunch, then head up and over the Paiute Mountains and on towards our first nights camp in Caruthers Canyon. This is a serious amount of terrain that we're going to be covering on Friday. That's why we need to get out on time. We want to have plenty of time to enjoy our travels. If we can get to Fort Paiute by noon for lunch, we'll be in good shape to get to Caruthers Canyon in time to set up camp and start dinner. I'll start another thread for all to discuss the dining options, ideas, etc.... I know you guys like your camping feast's (BBB'06?).

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO CAN'T MAKE IT OUT UNTIL FRIDAY AFTERNOON/EVENING

As previously discussed in this thread, those of you who can't come out until after work, (Mark, Mike and whoever else is coming) you'll be meeting us at the Caruthers Canyon camp site.

Mark actually posted a very good set of directions to Caruthers Canyon, and to back that up, I have posted very exact directions to camp from the main road, complete with pictures, and coordinates.

SATURDAY 09/16/06

On Saturday morning, we can make breakfast, and take a nice short drive up to the upper Caruthers Canyon. It's an incredible area up there, and our stop there won't be complete until everybody gets to enjoy it. There will be an opportunity to get some rock crawling done up there at the very top, completely optional at the very top.

After we're done checking that out, we'll come back to camp, pack up and leave to our next destination, the Mojave Road and Rock Springs. After Rock Springs, we'll stop for lunch at the Rock House, a very short distance from Rock Springs. There is a pit toilet there so everybody can relieve themselves.

From there, depending on time, we can take a detour off of the Mojave Road, and show you all a very cool spot off the beaten path.

Or, take another detour and check out the Kelso Station. It's one of only two (the other is in Caliente, NV) Spanish style train depots in the country. The government has restored and turned it into a visitors center. It's worth checking out, especially if you've never seen it, they restored it to original, and did an awesome job.

From there, we head back up the Mojave Road and towards our next nights camp. We will camp at either Beal Mt. or Marl Springs. I'll make the determination depending on how we're set for time.

We'll set up camp, and commence to have a nice time, with food and spirits!!

SUNDAY 09/17/06

After breakfast, we pack up and head on out. Next major stop will be at the "Mailbox" where we will sign in, in the Mojave Road guest book, and leave trinkets that maybe a traveler on the road might need, take photos, and head down through the lava dome, and to seventeen mile point. There, we cross Kelbaker Road and head towards Soda Lake. As long as Soda Lake is relatively dry, we'll cross it, then the Mojave flood plain and to our final destination, the beautiful Afton Canyon. After Afton Canyon, we'll head up out of the canyon to the Afton Canyon campground and congregate there, air up, maybe grab a bite to eat and we can all hit the I 15 freeway and on to our respective homes!!!

Off Topic:

Joel, you have a new front grille I see. Did you get a Toyota emblem from a Crusher? It's hard to tell on your avatar, but it looks like it, cool.

I am interested in this trip. As we get closer to September I can firm up my commitment. I love the Mojave and used to roam a lot of it in both my POV full-sized Bronco as well as the company Bronco I used to drive.

At my last job we used to have a group that camped at a great spot in the New York mountains until Feinstein's Mojave Preserve ruined that. We shifted over to Nevada to continue our camping, spitting, cursing and shooting evil firearms .

Desert is fun!

Cool, I hope you can go. The Mojave Preserve & The Mojave Road is my favorite place. I have a couple of great spots in the New York Mountains I like to go also.
